Stata

I made use of Stata during an assignment were a model was made for prepayment of mortgages. With Microsoft SQL Server a table was created with all relevant variables during the lifetime of the mortgage. This table was very large but could simply be read by Stata with the ODBC interface. A server with a lot of internal memory was needed because Stata wants to have the whole dataset in storage. Stata has excellent facilities for creating graphs in various formats. These facilities were used to create bubbleplots of interesting variables and for showing the performance of the models in various timeperiods. Many statistical techniques are available in Stata. In combination with the macro language these were used to build a program that fits linear and non-linear models on the data. The user written package estout (Ben Jann, ETH Zurich) was used to combine the results of various in one report in text or latex format.
Stata is available for the Windows, Unix and Mac platforms.
